Humanity & Our Self Destructive Nature

I’m sure everyone out there has noticed how whacky the world seems to be these days.  It’s sort of hard to ignore. Not that insanity in the world is anything new historically.  But there is a difference between then and now.  Never in the world of Man, have we been as completely connected as now.  We are connected with the global economy, hear the news as it’s happening, and watch the brain matter explode right on our screen. Many are connected via internet constantly on mobile devices.  We can argue whether all of this is good or bad, but like all things there are pros and cons.

Environmental toxicity is at a dangerous level these days, as it was predicted it would be by now for the last 50 to 60 years. Our Oceans are in fact, actually dying now and are more than 50% totally screwed. More and more species are becoming extinct all the time, and for the first time a global fear of a collapsing biosphere is emerging.  I’d like to ask the world, “have you not been paying attention? Did you not care once about what was right in front of you all this time?” But the answer is obvious. For the most part, people really don’t care until it effects them personally and is directly in their backyard.  Soon it will be, like it or not. And when it does, how you react is crucial.  This is a pivotal time for the human race. This is the point when you can either point fingers about who did it, or do something about it.  Let me spare you the suspense about who did it?

LookInTheMirrorWe all did it. So man up and look in the mirror about your contribution to it all. Don’t berate yourself, that’s not what I’m getting at. But accept the fact that as a species, humanity at large did nothing to stop it. We have had plenty of time to consider our actions, and we chose “other things”. Me, you and everyone you know is part of it. Don’t think it’s all on the government or corporations.

Some people think education is key to solving so many of the things that plague us as a race. This is true. But before education comes the old fashioned “giving a damn”. If you don’t really care about the quality of the water your grandchildren will drink, why would you be motivated to understand how the biology of this planet works, or that ground water is connected and constantly recycled?  When you pollute a stream somewhere else, it will eventually become the water your grandchildren drink. It’s really not rocket science. Here’s a few facts direct from National Geographic about potable water on planet Earth you may not have thought about. So I ask, do you feel doing permanent damage to any lake, river or stream is acceptable for any reason?

Freshwater makes up a very small fraction of all water on the planet. While nearly 70 percent of the world is covered by water, only 2.5 percent of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 1 percent of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in glaciers and snowfields. In essence, only 0.007 percent of the planet’s water is available to fuel and feed its 6.8 billion people.

But then again, I also believe the Earth is a living being not to be exploited. So if you want to laugh at me, go ahead. Just remember when the shit hits the fan, that this planet owes us nothing.  It’s been a long time since we’ve ever “given back” for what we take.

Some day, she just might  Take It Back

And then we have the increasingly ramping up social issues here at home. Racism is back on the scene again in our part of the world, not that it ever really left. But the divide is getting bad again in the Western world. This to be honest shocks me. With all of the problems in our world and many societies, are we seriously so unevolved that we put so much emphasis on something like skin colour? REALLY? That’s just plain embarrassing. So I’m going to ahead and feature this video that a friend made. We go back a long ways in the music realm, 1996 in fact when I was going to recording school in Madison.  I think this video is fantastic and you should check it out. Leave a comment on their YouTube channel.  Show your support.  Pass it on!

I’m going to be really blunt on the issue of racism when it comes to things like regular Police brutality and murders. It’s not on the black community to change this. It’s all on white people. It’s up to white people to “shame” other white people and make them feel like the scum bags they are being. I guess Dr. King didn’t have an emotional impact on everyone. But he sure did me. When 150 black people march up to a local Police station and make demands for things to change, it’s called a riot. Call in the National Guard and knock them flat. When 150 white people do the same, well those are just concerned citizens, right? You don’t have to be loud, antagonistic or make threats. Make quiet but serious demands. If this nonsense doesn’t stop right here right now…..all of you fine badged officers involved in any part of this will be out of a job. Because we, the tax paying check writers will not allow you to hold this position if you are going to allow this to go on. And don’t think it’s only white officers that have this problem. Human nature is human nature. People just love to hate.

It’s always worked historically, and it’s working again. So much of this now in my opinion is becoming more of a class divide issue. Economic divide is getting very extreme.  But let’s face it, most of us are far from wealthy no matter what our colour or creed. I’ve lived below the official poverty line for many years for reasons well beyond my control. Of course it makes me angry sometimes. So don’t be stupid my friends, most of us are on the same side. Don’t take the bait. Don’t get involved in the great divide by hating the people you have the most in common with. Or did you think that someday those Republicans / Conservatives would invite you to their party & give you a gravy job for your years of support?

White folks: If you are acting a fool; Don’t think I won’t shame you if I see you acting stupid on the street and supporting this brutality. I’ll make you feel small and insignificant. If your with me on this, then it’s your job to also set other white people straight. Yep, it’s your duty I’m afraid to say……take the challenge and man up.
Black folks:  A huge percentage of white people don’t have nearly the privilege some think we do. I have friends from all over the world, from radically different cultures. Do you? Or have you been in your own neighborhood a bit too long? It’s a big world out there. No group of people is “all the same”. So be careful not to make enemies out of those who would be your friends.

  1. I can sincerely feel your anguish. as your personal friend, I hope this doesn’t mean you a re ” at the end of your rope” frustrated, on these important matters! yo u have a right to be impatient with your species. you are young, and full of ideals. I just want to point out one thing to y ou ( in the aqua dea tribe, so ironically). tribalism ( racism) has been with us as a species for at least 60,00 years. ideals like freedom and equality and justice and forgiveness have been with us for at most six thousand years. do the math. do y ou really think you can abate racism by telling racists ( of all colors) that they are acting stupit! (?)…..this is not a lecture, this is not advice. this is an old dog you know very well asking you to watch things as they develop this summer, and do not step up, step back.the vibes you put into the atmosphere with your digereedo are vastly more important than any attempt you can make with your very vulnerable body towards making a change in society.( seriously, a jewish cop beats up a jewish soldier, because hes black?! jews, who know racism like no other tribe and they are not CHANGED by history!?)) I have been in demonstrations since the Vietnam protests, and seen riots since watts in ’65 and I can tell you with surety, step back from whats coming, because you cant squeeze sixty thousand years into six thousand years, no matter how noble the cause. I don’t know this, but I suspect, that the aboriginal tribes have been expecting this for a long long time. they will survive, and you are one with them. be well jleven

    • Hey Jim. Many valid points here, and they are all well taken. I realize you’ve ‘been there, done that’, and I always listen to what you have to say. Yeah I am just frustrated of late, but I wouldn’t say I’m totally at the end of my rope just yet. Though I am exceptionally worked up about some things, particularly the environmental issues. No worries, you won’t see me on the evening news or hear of me getting my head bashed in at protests. I stopped going to environmental protests years ago when I realized they just purely don’t matter. There’s not enough people involved to create a tipping point for it to turn yet. Maybe it will in my lifetime, maybe not. But I do feel I have to answer to something higher, so have no intention to stop doing what I do. So in the meantime I keep doing my own personal things in that dept., which are quite a number in hope it might make some drop in the bucket. As for my business name, ‘arqa dea tribe’ it was always meant to be a bit ironic. It’s a very poor translation of a very old language, that roughly means “Earth Knowledge”. IE: A group of people that is committed to caring about the planet that supports life.
Your points on history of racism is also very well taken. I have no preconceived notions that I can stop any of it, and I wouldn’t even say I have idealism regarding it in terms of it changing now. But I will at very least, not tolerate it in my personal space. Stepping back is something I’ve always had to do anyhow. The nature of my physical condition dictates that for me most days anyhow. And it’s one reason I put everything into the music. So no worries there, that won’t change. Thanks much for your always well composed thoughts!

      • i appreciate and thank you for your reply ” across the generations”. you are making stupendous strides, stupendous, in interpersonal and societal spheres, with your organizational efforts. I am only positing that the vibrations that you release into the universal energy grid by way of your music may be way more beneficial than we can know! I believe I can hear motifs, themes, variations, improvisations, a real dialogue between your energy and the vibration we live in. there is a vibrant plea there, and your mastery gives it power….posit it this way. you are one member of a very large species that has made the effort to tune in, and is communicating with the cosmic energy.i’ve been in the woods enough to know that someone , something, is listening. go well in your journey, and I know you will keep on. be well jlven
